Ethereum Foundation Unveils 2025 Vision Focused on Decentralization, UX, and Layer 1 Scaling

In a powerful joint blog post published on April 28, Ethereum Foundation (EF) Executive Director Aya Miyaguchi and co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared the organization’s long-term vision. The Ethereum Foundation 2025 roadmap is anchored in decentralization, technological resilience, and broad community empowerment.

The updated strategy strongly emphasizes enhancing Layer 1 (L1) infrastructure, expanding blobs technology, and improving user experience (UX), all with the aim of advancing Ethereum’s mission as a globally accessible decentralized network.

Redefining Ethereum’s Core Priorities

Buterin and Miyaguchi emphasized that Ethereum’s future must ensure its underlying properties, such as decentralization, resilience, and openness, remain accessible to users and developers alike.

Their vision includes broadening Ethereum’s real-world usage across vital sectors like decentralized finance (DeFi), social media, and AI-powered coordination platforms. To that end, the EF is working to fortify both the technical and social infrastructure by supporting decentralized development, strengthening risk management, and scaling resilient systems.

Among the Foundation’s key 2025 priorities:

  • Scaling the Ethereum mainnet.
  • Advancing EIP-4844 Blob technology was introduced during the Dencun upgrade (also known as Proto-Danksharding), which significantly reduces L2 data costs.
  • Improving L1–L2 interoperability.
  • Enhancing wallet usability and simplifying gas fee understanding.
  • Streamlining the developer experience with better tools, grants, and documentation.

The blog post also underscores a desire to boost visibility for app developers and L2 projects at major events like Devcon, signaling a shift toward celebrating the application layer of Ethereum more prominently.

Leadership Restructure to Match Vision

Alongside the roadmap, the Ethereum Foundation announced a major leadership transition aimed at reinforcing its strategic execution capabilities. In March, Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz K. Stańczak were appointed as co-executive directors, bringing a balance of technical and operational expertise.

Wang will act as a strategic bridge between the EF board and daily operations, while Stańczak will lead execution of Ethereum’s technical infrastructure for the duration of his two-year term. They’re supported by Bastian Aue and Josh Stark, who have been tasked with improving hiring, project management, and communications.

Together, the leadership team is committed to maintaining Ethereum’s founding principles of open-source development, censorship resistance, privacy, and security.
